Some Bits on the Divisions Under Indian Railways

I see a growing demand for the inclusion of the Coastal Karnataka under the SWR (not that it did not exist before, just that it wasn't as loud), which essentially requires the creation of a Mangalore division. Further, the current government hasn't really done anything about another demand for the Gulbarga division as well.

With this in mind, I was looking for some information about the existing divisions on the Indian Railways website and here is what I found.

1. Three cities have divisions under multiple railway zones

i.) Mumbai

Central Zone
Western Zone

Konkan Railway although headquartered in Navi Mumbai, has no Mumbai division I suppose but Ratnagiri and Karwar.

ii.) Nagpur

Central Zone
South East Central Zone

iii.) Lucknow

Northern Zone
North Eastern Zone

2. Two cities have multiple divisions under the same zone

i.) Hyderabad - South Central Zone

Hyderabad
Secunderabad

ii.) Kolkata - Eastern Zone

Sealdah
Howrah

3. Four zones cater to a single state

Eastern Railway (West Bengal)
North Central Railway (UP)
North Eastern Railway (UP)
North Western Railway (Rajasthan)

4. Two zones have the maximum number of divisions

Southern Railway — 6
Western Railway — 6

5. State with the maximum number of zones

UP (3)

If Mumbai, Nagpur, Lucknow, Hyderabad, and Kolkata can have two divisions within a single metropolitan region, then Mangalore and Gulbarga do qualify to get their own individual divisions under one zone.
